Government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides

The Cyprus problem will not be solved through public statements, which in many cases are designed to serve other considerations, but at the negotiating table, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, the spokesman said the government would remain focused on the hard work in the negotiations and the results would be judged on their merits, he said.

Commenting on the recent debate in the media over the cost of a solution, the spokesman said this was the first time that international bodies such as the IMF and the World Bank were involved “so we can have in front of us real data”, he said.

“At the moment no one is able to know the facts to the point where they can say the cost is a negative development”. In any case he said it should be seen as a positive and not a negative development.

Responding to a question that much of the criticism related to the fact that the Turkish Cypriot side appeared to be more focused on property compensation rather than restitution or return, Christodoulides said: “Whatever the Turkish side says does not mean that this is something that has been agreed at the negotiating table. The economic aspect of the solution is not only related to property.”
